The goal is to compress the muscles which, as they contract, compress the veins of your circulation. This then creates a pumping effect that allows blood to flow back to the heart more easily and better oxygenate your muscles afterwards. Another benefit of these clothes is that during training, they will prevent the accumulation of lactic acid in your muscles. They also help you recover more quickly between training sessions or competitions in addition to reducing muscle inflammation.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLOTHING


Colored compression stockings are often seen on runners, but there are many other types of compression products on the market. They are made in leggings to locate the calf muscle, but also in shorts ¾, short shorts, short or long sleeved t-shirts.

 



One last trick when shopping for compression garments; be very careful what type of compression you choose! There are clothes for "During" and "After" physical exertion. You can wear the "During" garments even after your workout to help you recover, but you cannot wear the "After" garments during exercise because they have a much higher compression level and can be very uncomfortable and will not improve your performance if you wear them during a workout.

What are compression garments used for in sports?


You've probably seen runners wearing high compression socks, compression sleeves, shorts and tights, and wondered what they are and if you also need to buy them, and which ones to wear during your running training plans.

These garments are based on a medical concept that was validated a long time ago: compression garments, made with highly technical, elastic and graduated compression fabrics that mould the different parts of the body, improving blood and lymphatic circulation.


In sports, compression garments are designed to improve performance and accelerate recovery. Although there is not yet a consensus among experts on the benefits of compression garments, research has shown that they could do what the manufacturers say they do (You follow me 🙂 ).



Does it really work?

Research conducted by the University of Newcastle has proven that lower body compression garments increase blood flow and reduce heart rate during endurance running, supporting the theory that compression socks should improve performance.

But the same study did not prove that compression garments actually make runners faster. And other researchers also found that compression socks do not improve performance on a 10K run.



Three factors could be at the root of this contradiction: the initial finding may be wrong, the runners' performance improves too little to be significant, or the weight of the socks may counteract their beneficial physiological effect. This may sound odd, but wearing the socks, which weigh about 85 grams, may hinder performance.

Indeed, 85 grams is the same weight difference between the Asics Kayano with gel support and the lighter road running shoe version, the Speedstar. 85 grams is not negligible.

 

 

Pain Mitigation
How it works: The foot hitting the ground sends vibrations to the runner's leg and causes the muscles to tremble. This damages the muscles and adds to the post-exercise pain. Compression garments keep the muscles in place to prevent muscle breakdown.

Does it really work?
Research conducted by Massey University in Auckland has proven that there is a reduction in muscle pain 24 hours after exercise after wearing compression socks over a 10 km run.


Interestingly, this study found that the pain was reduced particularly in the compressed muscle area. 93% of the subjects who ran without compression socks experienced pain in the lower leg one day after the run, but only 14% of the subjects who ran with compression socks experienced similar pain.

Accelerated recovery
How it works: By creating extra blood flow, the compression wear after exercise is supposed to accelerate the elimination of toxins and reintroduce those substances that muscles need to regenerate.

There is research to support the countless anecdotes from athletes and air travelers who claim to have lighter legs after wearing compression socks.
